The Island of Ischia

The island of Ischia, known as the green or youth island, is famous for the richness of its thermal springs and the beauty of its beaches and woods. The volcanic nature of the Ischia land and the always mild climate, even in winter, make the island fertile. Ischia is characterized by an extreme variety of places and truly suggestive panoramas: from the beaches and marine bays, to the hills planted with vines, to the Epomeo mountain surrounded by oak and acacia woods. It is the third most populous Italian island, after Sicily and Sardinia and the largest in the Gulf of Naples, although the island of Capri is by far the most famous. The island was called Pithecusa by the Latins, a name that tradition derives from the Greek "pithos" (vase), that is, the Island of the potters. The thermal waters of the island of Ischia have been well known and used since ancient times, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds found in the site of Pithecusa.

Geographical Notes

The island of Ischia, of volcanic origin, is a fascinating land colored by shades of rural reds, vibrant greens and soothing blues. The beaches of Ischia, although not very wide, are characterized by their diversity, by the rock sculptures, by the sheltered caves and are normally found close to imposing and steep promontories. "Il Paradiso all'Improvviso" is the name of a fascinating film on the green island of Ischia. The real beauty of this island lies precisely in the variety of its beaches and in the influence of the volcanic earth below, which has created in some of its parts a dark sand, warm waters and vapors that come out of the ground. The island is approximately 18 nautical miles from Naples. The highest relief is represented by Mount Epomeo, 788 meters high and located in the center of the island. Several parts of its coastline are included in the Kingdom of Neptune marine protected area.

When to go:

The presence of Mount Epomeo and that of the island in the Tyrrhenian Sea favor a mild weather even in winter with frequent climatic changes. In winter, in the presence of libeccio and sirocco and therefore with frequent rains, the average humidity is 63%, however on days with winds from the northern quadrants the humidity is significantly reduced as well as in spring.

Historical Notes:

Ischia has a very ancient history, in the eighth century BC, the Greeks of Euboea landed there and founded Pithecusae, the first Greek colony in the West. Today from that period remains an archaeological museum full of precious finds such as the Cup of Nestor, the first testimony of Greek writing in Italy. The symbol of the island is the Aragonese castle which is located in the east of the island: it is an islet, connected to the mainland by a bridge, which in the Ischia Middle Ages became the real city center with houses, churches and fields. The poet Vittoria Colonna, wife of Ferrante d'Avalos, Marquis of Pescara, lived on the Aragonese Castle. The wedding between Vittoria and Ferrante was celebrated in the cathedral of the Aragonese castle in the first decade of the 16th century.

Salus per Aquam: the well-being that comes from water:

The hydrothermal heritage of Ischia, spread over about 42 km² of the island, is made up of 29 groups of thermal springs, from which 103 springs emerge, which are for the most part bicarbonate-sulphate-alkaline or sodium chloride. Each with particular properties and characteristics; crossing various geological layers, some of them mix with marine waters, enriching themselves with minerals and marine substances, and then almost all meet with fumaroles, i.e. jets of water vapor (from 30 ° to 100 ° C) often mixed with other gaseous substances , and thus become real "beneficial" waters for health and well-being. The three types of thermal treatment are: sea water for thalassotherapy, Psammatotherapy, Marine climotherapy or Balneotherapy carried out with warm sea water (> 30 ° C), thermal muds, thermal waters, which differ in pH, electrical conductivity, quality. of mineral salts (with salts from 2.5 to 30.0 grams/liter) and by temperature (cold waters (minuf of 20°), hypothermal waters (20°-30°), meothermal waters (30°-40°) and hyperthermal (more of 40°).

the Thermalpark of the island of Ischia:

The Romans, who appreciated the thermal cures, enjoyed the thermal waters of Ischia when the rest of the world was still living in a state of barbarism. Today you can also appreciate them with a visit to one of the many parks scattered around the island, beautiful to look at because they are lush and scenic, but above all to be used to relax a bit. The most famous are the Poseidon Thermal Gardens, but the Aphrodite, Eden and Tropical Gardens, the Terme di Castiglione, Bagnitiello, Negombo and Cavascura are also worth a relaxing day. What do these parks offer? You can choose from swimming pools with water of different temperatures, waterfalls, Kneipp paths, saunas and, almost always, access to the sea through a private beach. There is never a shortage of additional services for beauty and well-being, such as massages, mud treatments, gyms and so on. The gardens and parks are real establishments, so they have solariums with sunbeds and umbrellas, restaurants, bars.

the Dishes and Typical Products of the Island:

Ischia has a long and renowned cooking tradition, the typical dish par excellence is the Ischia-style rabbit, eating it here is unparalleled and the secret lies in the use of "special" spices and in the hand of those who have been preparing it for a long time knowing how to flavor it. with the right dose and cooking time, this second dish is obviously to be combined with the first and in this case with a nice bucatino that absorbs the taste of the rabbit's sauce and makes it unique, an important and fundamental recommendation ... the rabbit is eaten strictly with the hands and this is not bad education but simple tradition. Obviously, being on an island, even the fish finds traditional dishes and tasty preparations that you will only have to taste to be amazed. The typical products instead see the lemon stand out with the liqueur preparations that derive from it in the famous "limoncello craft of Ischia" and above all in the local grape which produced in renowned Doc vines allows to transform into wines with strong and decisive tastes that are known throughout the world...
